The BMW M30 is an inline-6 petrol engine produced from 1968 to 1994. Known as the 'big six', it powered models from the E3 to the E32 7 Series and E24 6 Series.

Cast iron block, aluminium head, chain-driven SOHC. Renowned for extreme durability and reliability. It became the basis for the M88/S38 M engines.

Displacements from 2.5 to 3.5 litres, up to 218 hp (catalyst version). Many units exceeded 500,000 km without rebuild.

Weak points include camshaft wear and oil pump on later versions. Loved by enthusiasts for its bulletproof nature and classic character.
