  • Improved intake manifold for better torque
  • Crankcase ventilation system reduces oil consumption
  • 16-valve DOHC cylinder head

The BMW M44 is a DOHC inline-4 petrol engine produced from 1996 to 2001. It was an evolution of the M42 with larger displacement (1.9 L) and improved performance. Used in E36, Z3, and E30. Cast iron block, aluminium head, chain drive, 16 valves. Power up to 140 hp. Improved crankcase ventilation and intake manifold.

Reliable and efficient. Known for higher oil consumption due to aging valve stem seals and overheating risk with neglected cooling system.
