The BMW M50 replaced the M20 in 1989. It introduced DOHC and 4 valves per cylinder, significantly improving power. Early non-VANOS versions had 150 hp (2.0) and 192 hp (2.5). In 1992, Single VANOS on the intake cam was added for better low-end torque and fuel efficiency. Cast iron block, aluminium head, chain drive. Used in E36 and E34. Very reliable, but cooling system needs regular maintenance. Lifespan often exceeds 400,000 km.
