The BMW M54 (2000–2006) is highly respected. Aluminium block with iron liners, aluminium head. Double VANOS, electronic throttle. Displacements 2.2, 2.5, 3.0 L, up to 231 hp (M54B30). Used in E46, E39, E53 X5, Z3, Z4.

Extremely reliable, often exceeding 500,000 km with proper maintenance. Common issues: DISA valve, oil filter housing gasket, VANOS seals. Easily repairable without removing the engine.
