The BMW M43 is an evolution of the M40 engine, produced from 1993 to 2000. It featured Bosch Motronic fuel injection and a catalytic converter for better emissions. Like the M40, it had a cast iron block, aluminium head, and SOHC with hydraulic lash adjusters. Used in the E36 and E34. Simple and maintainable. Only 8 valves, no VANOS. Displacement 1.6 or 1.8 L, up to 115 hp. Reliable and economical, though less powerful than the M42. Main issues: cooling system and aging rubber seals.
