The BMW N42 is a new generation inline-4 petrol engine (2001–2006). It featured an aluminium block with cast iron liners, reducing weight. Double VANOS and Valvetronic (on 2.0 L versions) improved efficiency and response. Displacement 1.8 or 2.0 L, up to 143 hp. Used in E46 and E85.

Technologically advanced but prone to Valvetronic issues and oil leaks, requiring regular maintenance. Many owners reported increased oil consumption after 100,000 km.
