The BMW M47 is a 2.0-liter, inline-four diesel engine produced from 1998 to 2007. Known for combining low-end torque with excellent fuel efficiency, it powered several popular models like the E46 3-Series and E60 5-Series before being replaced by the N47 engine.

Features

  • Engine Block & Design: Features a lightweight aluminum block and cylinder head. It is a straight-four layout with a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) and 16 valves.
  • Fuel System: Early models used a high-pressure Bosch VP44 distributor pump, while later M47TU versions adopted more refined high-pressure Common Rail direct injection.
  • Turbocharging: Equipped with a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT), which optimizes boost pressure across the entire rev range for smooth power delivery.
  • Air Intake: Features one swirl port and one tangential intake port per cylinder, improving air-fuel mixing and overall combustion efficiency.
