The BMW M62 is an evolution of the M60 (1996–2005). Aluminium block and head, timing chain. Used in E38, E39, E53. M62TU update (1998) added Single VANOS on intake, electronic throttle, water-cooled alternator. Displacements 3.5 and 4.4 L, up to 290 hp (M62TUB44). Valued for power and reliability; typical issues: timing chain guides and oil leaks from aging seals. Lifespan often exceeds 300,000 km.

In 1998 the M62 received a technical update (M62TU). Changes: - Single VANOS added to intake cams for improved low-end torque. - Electronic throttle (drive-by-wire) replaced mechanical linkage. - Water-cooled alternator for quieter operation and reliability. - Bosch ME 7.2 engine management. - Improved cooling with electric fan. Power increased to 290 hp, torque to 440 Nm (M62TUB44).
